General Information

'Townmills' is situated in the north-eastern corner of the island of Yell, the largest of Shetland's North Isles, which measures about 19 miles long by 7.5 miles wide and has a population of around 950.

Although remote, the island is connected to mainland Shetland by a regular 20 minute ro-ro ferry service which runs throughout the day from the ferry terminal at Ulsta to the south of the island, running to Toft about 10 minutes from Brae & Sullom Voe, and approximately 27 miles from Lerwick, Shetland's main town. The Shetland Islands themselves lie in the middle of the North Sea about 100 miles north of mainland Scotland and are in fact closer to Bergen in Norway than to Edinburgh. A daily overnight ferry service links Shetland with Aberdeen & Orkney (www.northlinkferries.co.uk) and there are regular flights to Sumburgh Airport at the south end of Shetland, from Aberdeen, Glasgow & Edinburgh (www.loganair.co.uk).

The island of Yell will appeal to anyone looking for a 'get-away-from-it-all' location, in particular anyone with an interest in bird watching, botany, geology and walking as there are lovely coastal walks and several picturesque beaches.

Local amenities in the vicinity of the house include a shop, primary school & public hall at Cullivoe to the west, with additional amenities at Mid Yell to the south, the main settlement on the island where there is a high school, leisure centre / swimming pool, and a medical centre.

To reach the property drive to Gutcher at the north end of Yell. At the brow of the hill on the approach to Gutcher turn right onto a single track road to Sandwick. Follow the road right to the end where there is a metal agricultural gate ahead of you which provides access to the track leading down to the property. The track over which there are access rights leads down to a gate to the site.
