Measuring about 19 miles long x 7½ miles wide and having a population of around 900, Yell is connected to Mainland Shetland by a regular ro-ro ferry service which runs throughout the day from Ulsta at the south end of the island, about 10 miles from the house, to Toft about 28 miles north of Lerwick. A similar service runs from Gutcher at the north end of Yell, to the neighbouring island of Unst.
